The Clue at Price’s Creek is Out!

Sometimes it seems to take forever to get a book done. There are lots of reasons why—some good, some not so good—but at “THE END” the goal is to have a book that you like. And when I say “you,” I don’t mean me (although I do have to like it too). The bottom line is that I want my readers to like it.

The Clue at Price’s Creek is the second book in a trilogy that started with The Mystery of Oak Island. It features Sam and Becky with their new friends, Andrew and Troy, on a hunt for pirate treasure.

PCcover2There were a lot of things I had to learn about before I could make Price’s Creek the book I wanted it to be. The very first thing I ran into was whether the name should be “Price Creek” (that’s the official name that the U.S. Coast Guard uses), “Prices Creek,” or “Price’s Creek”?

I did some research and found the Annual Report of the Public Printer from 1910 which included the “correct orthography of geographical names.” (Orthography means a list of how things are spelled—like whether you use an apostrophe ‘s’ or not.) In that report, they said that the correct spelling would be “Prices Creek” not “Price’s Creek.” (I don’t think they liked apostrophes very much because they did that for a lot of names across the United States.)

So, after finding that report, why do I use “Price’s Creek” instead of the officially correct “Prices Creek”? Well, because my story begins before 1910 when this report came out. It starts way back when Stede Bonnet was a pirate in the area, and at that time, it was called “Price’s Creek.”  I’m sure there are folks that think I should have used “Prices Creek,” but this is my story and I’m sticking to it! (Don’t even get me started on whether the Price’s Creek light should be called a lighthouse!)

As I said, The Clue at Price’s Creek has been a long time coming. It’s been a lot of fun and a lot of work, and I do like the way it turned out. I hope you do too.

By the way, the last book in the North Carolina series, The Secret on Bald Head Island, is scheduled to come out by the end of the summer. In that book, you’ll find how things work out for for Captain Stede Bonnet, gentleman pirate, and for L.C., Bonnet’s great, great, great, great…oh, I can never remember…granddaughter.

Happy Reading!
